Rest in Peace Niro Kaneswaralingam

KCA would like to remember Niro Kaneswaralingam, a bright and aspiring man who was taken from us in the early morning hours of Friday Oct 28th.

KCA sends out its condolences to Niro’s family and friends who are mourning him from the fatal accident that took his life. Niro has played an immense role as a leader and an inspiration for USTG Phoenix dance team as both a participant and dance coordinator at Kalaikal 2009 and 2010. He inspired many through his passion for dance to push the boundaries and brought many valuable skills to his team.

He was a remarkable person, who was humble, heard and thought through the opinions of his fellow teammates, adding his touch to the growth of his team and contributing to a family like atmosphere to his team and many participants at Kalaikal. His presence made a difference, and KCA will miss this remarkable person as all do today when we remember Niro Kaneswaralingam. We will miss you dearly.

Toronto, ON – March 31, 2010; First time contenders from University of Waterloo; Waterloo Warriors take the gold home at KALAIKAL 2010 held at the Queen Elizabeth Theater on the CNE Grounds. KCA launched itself as a not for profit arts organization determined to take Tamil Arts mainstream in December of 2004, and now almost 5 years later has established itself as full fledge arts organization successfully executing KALAIKAL 2009, and 2010; a dance competition and KCA Productions which is a platform for vocal artists. Through the years KCA has been gaining support from vast majority of the youth, media outlets, community professionals and organizations in driving towards the primary goal; building a greater channel for the arts.

Proceeds generated from KCA events are reinvested back into the arts fulfilling the mission of Unity, Identity and Charity; bridging the gap between the arts and community. Currently KCA is building other arts projects that require resources additional to proceeds from events such as the dance competition. Supporters are encouraged to invest and donate to these worthy causes being carried out by KCA.

KALAIKAL 2010 included 450 plus dancers, and vocal artists who participated in the event with a full house of enthusiast. Amongst the highly energetic audience were chief guests George Smitherman, Menaka Thakkar, and Neethan Shan.

Soulful pop singer Roveena opened up the awards ceremony with the song “Believe” by Suzie McNeil, as coordinators and KCA Board of Directors assembled on stage to announce the winners of KALAIKAL 2010. The night was filled to the brim with positive energy arraying from all ages as the community embraced the significance of UNITY and sustaining Tamil Culture through the Arts. On that note 2010 teams; MAC FLOW MARAUDERS, OSHAWA TITANS, RYERSON ROYALTY, UTM STALLIONS, UTSC ASSASSINS, UTSG PHOENIX, and YORK HUSKIES who placed second all walked away as prideful contenders who are making a difference not just in the academic field but also in the community.

The event’s success is owed to the teams, participants, volunteers, sponsors, media sponsors, attendees, community members, participating TSA’s and the KCA Team who coordinate year long to execute the event. KALAIKAL 2011 has been officially launched; please contact Director of Performing Arts for more information on the event guidelines for 2011.

I saw it all on Sunday afternoon at the 2010 Kalaikal Dance Competition!

Bringing together Tamil post-secondary students from across Ontario, Kalaikal Creative Arts hosted a crazy assembly of performers, highlighting Tamil culture through music and dance.

Teams reppin’ different universities from across Ontario came together for a friendly competition at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. (And I kid you not! Members of each team’s spirit squad were screaming just as loud for their competition! Lol.) Each ensemble came with their own unique mix of beats and melodies, crazy combo of costumes, and mystery themes that unfolded before us. They mixed the old with the new, the east with the west (ref: Jay-Z & Bharathanatyam) and teared the theatre up!

The audience also enjoyed a few solo performances from some of the Toronto Tamil’s community’s up-and-coming MCs, singers, and dancers, and a high school team comprised of crazy young talent!

All in all, it was beautiful to see the young Tamil community come together for a strong event that highlighted the vibrancy, talents, and strength of its young artists.

And congrats to Sunday evening’s winners, the Waterloo Warriors!

Toronto, ON – March 28, 2010; Members of KCA are gearing up for KALAIKAL 2010 at the Queen Elizabeth Theater on the CNE Grounds as there are only hours left for the event doors to open at 3:00PM EST. The Dance Competition is one of the arts projects to hit Toronto this year coordinated by KCA.

8 Universities and College Teams comprising of 400 plus dancers from: George Brown College, McMaster University, Ryerson University, Seneca College, University of Ontario Institute and Technology, University of Toronto Mississauga Campus, University of Toronto Scarborough Campus, University of Toronto St George Campus, University of Waterloo, and York University will be competing for the prestigious KALAIKAL 2010 Championship title.

Cadets: KY Panthers 2010, KCA’s very own youth team comprising of high school students from the GTA will also be putting on a production, far exceeding the breath taking performance from 2009.

General and VIP admission tickets are officially sold out and tickets will not be available at the door. The event will entail a Pre Show from 3:00PM and curtains for the show will be opening at 4:00PM with the Canadian national anthem by Thulasi Nandakumar, past Canadian Idol Contestant.

There’ll be a whole lotta shakin’ going on Sunday at Exhibition Place’s Queen Elizabeth Theatre.

Some 500 students from eight Ontario universities will compete at Kalaikal 2010, an artistic showcase of Tamil culture through music, dance and costumes.

This annual event is organized by Kalaikal Creative Arts, a non-profit organization dedicated to taking Tamil arts and culture into the mainstream by providing resources to young artists.

For this event, college and university Tamil student associations recruit teams of up to 40 dancers and create 15-minute dance performances.

“We are striving to showcase Tamil culture through various avenues and bring it out to the forefront,” says George Emmanuvel, a Ryerson student and director of the organization.

Kalaikal 2010 takes place from 4 to 10 p.m. Tickets at $40, $100 or $150, which includes a donation, and can be purchased through 1-800-971-3656. For more information, see www.kalaikal.com.

Toronto, ON – March 26, 2010; KALAIKAL is one of the most anticipated dance competitions in a slew of dance shows to hit the airwaves in Toronto this spring. The show will be hosted March 28th, 2010 at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre at the CNE grounds and will feature 8 dance productions from college and university dance clubs from all over Ontario.

The show will cater to today’s audience and described as the ‘Ultimate Dance Competition’ for this generation. The event will kick-off with an artist’s exhibit and then lead right into the dance competition. KCA Productions – the new and expanding sector focusing on music will have various vocal groups performing throughout the course of the show.

As the competition fast approaches, teams are making the final haul in the remaining 58 hours. At this point in the game the rhythm of each dancer’s heartbeat is beating to their coordinators counting in their dance sequence. The competing teams of 2010 have displayed utmost levels of dedication and sportsmanship that the community has yet to witness in the KCA time line.

“Waterloo has some very strong, competitive dance groups that compete nationally,” says Johnny Trinh of the student life office, instancing Dancers in Motion, a student club that “celebrates Tamil culture through dance”. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Toronto, ON, Canada, March 01, 2010, the countdown to KALAIKAL 2010 has reached measurable momentum while making history moving forward.

Hundreds of attendees and KALAIKAL dance team members witnessed the Oshawa Titans take home the INVINCIBLE 2010 Freestyle Dance Faceoff title. Adding to the list of victories for the night, RLE Media & Entertainment won KCAs first DJ Battle.

INVINCIBLE 2010 – The Official Countdown to KALAIKAL 2010 is a fundraising event for the dance teams participating in this years Inter-College and University Dance Competition. The night ended with a mighty victory by the very energetic team; the OSHAWA TITANS. Eight college and university dance teams came together to scope out their fellow competitors, entering their top male and female dancers into the battle to provide a preview of the ultimate dance competition taking place on March 28th at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre located on the CNE Grounds.

Attendees witnessed the Oshawa Titans’ great leap to victory as it was being STREAMED LIVE on the KCA website, with an impressive 19,995 unique hits and over 1300 live viewers. Not only is this a landmark event for KCA but a testament to the amount of unity that all the teams continue to showcase, carrying forward the true spirit of the arts that motivates many of the talented individuals in the community.

KCA would also like to address an incident that occurred after the completion of INVINCIBLE 2010. As the night ended with all the attendees exiting the venue, external members unaffiliated with KCA, KALAIKAL’s partners or participants, took part in an act of violence towards another group of attendees leaving the venue.

These types of acts are condemned by KCA, and further relay that the commitment to safety and ensuring the wellbeing of our participants and partners are of up most importance. With full confidence and commitment KCA will continue to work diligently to secure the continued safety of all our stakeholders and attendees.
